     out of state wedding

My son is from NJ. His fiance is from NC. The wedding is to be in NC. My son plans to move there several months before the wedding. My dilemma: There are many who he would like to invite to the wedding, but would not be able to go to North Carolina. It is a 9 hr drive, plus expenses. Since he would already be living in NC. Would it be appropriate to have a reception in NJ either before or after the wedding? We felt that having a reception in NJ when he will already be living in NC might be tacky, and just seem like they are looking for wedding gifts. Please advise if it is ok or are there other alternatives.

Dear Mom,

It is common for couples to have more than one reception (after the wedding) due to relatives living in different states. And, as it is in this case, it is very common for a couple that is living in a different state. So, it is quite acceptable for you or them to host a reception in your home-town after the wedding.

A wonderful way for all of the home-town crowd feel as if they are a part of the wedding is to play a video of the wedding during the reception. So, you may want to mention to the happy couple that this is an option.

Best wishes,
