I know that a lot of people make a donation to a charity in guests' names instead of favors. How does this work tax-wise? Do we really make 200 small donations in each and every guest's name? Or, are we just saying that we've made the donation in the guest's name but really make one large donation in our name and take the tax deduction?
I can't think of any good favor ideas and thought that a donation would work but it seems kind of selfish to take a nice tax deduction from something that was supposed to be from our guests.

It's hardly selfish to take the tax benefit that you are entitled to for a selfless gift given at your wedding. I would tend to encourage just taking the entire deduction (after consulting your accountant, of course) - it's supposed to be a donation on behalf of your guests...not a gift in their tax interest. Let guests know that a donation was made on their behalf, and everyone should be thrilled. Shayna Walker, Williamsburg Wedding Design http://www.williamsburgweddingdesign.com
