donation to charity in lieu of wedding favors

Three of our family members have died from cancer.

We would like to make a donation in their names instead of giving our guests favors. How do we correctly word this so out guests will know what we are doing?

Dear Glo,

You can place a card at each place setting stating "a donation has been made in your name to organization in lieu of favors" or "In lieu of favors, the bride and groom have made a charitable donation to ____ in your name."

Is it proper to mention the people who have died from cancer in the place card?

Such as: In lieu of favors we have made a donation to the American Cancer Society to remember

name

name

name

Dear Glo,

This would be a personal decision. But in my opinion, I don't think that it would be the best way to go about it. I think that most of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another and would appreciate your gesture. But, when actual names are mentioned, it may be a bit too close to our own pain.

Best wishes,

I agree with Rebecca -- you want the reception to be upbeat and not too depressing. However, you could mention these people on your wedding program if you were having some sort of a "rememberance type" ceremony like a memorial candle lighting ceremony. memorial candles.
