17 year old not invited with guest

My son is getting married soon. They are at the limit of guests they can afford to host. He sent invitation to one aunt that was addressed:
Mr & Mrs. Smith and David. (thier son, he is 17.)

On the reply they responded "4" which means David will be bringing his girlfriend. We come from a large family and my son's other cousins are nott invited to bring a date either. Aunt Smith never asked if it was OK just assumed that it was. Now if he says nothing and Dave brings a date and my son doesn't allow others to to the same, it will cause probems. What should we do? Does my son address it or should the parents? My wife says she's not getting involved. My son feels that his Aunt should have asked but is afraid to speak up. He now says "I guess I'll have to let them all bring dates" This is another 10 -12 guests. What do we do?
Thanks.

Your son really needs to make a phone call to let his aunt know that he wishes he could invited dates, but there just isn't room in their chosen venue or in the budget, sorry. it wasn't very polite of them to invite their own guest, but I'm sure you can find a polite way to let them know your position.

I completely agree. Your son will face other more challenging issues in the future. This is a good place to start.
