My wife and I are at odds over a "second" reception for those that cannot attend the wedding and reception in the bride's hometown. She wants to hold a reception about a month after the wedding and serve food and drinks while I suggested that we can hold an open house for our friends to meet our son's bride and do the same. Which would be more appropriate given we will not have all the trappings of a reception such as a bouqet toss, first dance, or even a wedding cake?

Either are fine as the second reception could be anything. Your guests may expect some sort of cake though. It really doesn't have to be a wedding cake.
Please do not mention gifts, as this could be interpreted as the reason for the party. This isn't necessarily a gift giving situation.
