     Alcoholic beverages for wedding reception

We are having a problem with the plans for the alcohol portion of the reception. We originally wanted open bar but with over 500 guests that would become very expensive. These are our alternative ideas; cash bar after the first two hours until 10 and then beer only or beer and set-ups. The guests' age range is diverse. How do we do this correctly? Vodka only? Any suggestions PLEASEUnsure

Cash bar is never really an option when hosting an event. While I understand how it got started, you certainly should host a reception for your family and friends and expect them to pay for something.
Your REAL options are to scale back the guest count so that you can afford to host the event properly and not ask guest to pay for anything. If you can't bear to part with any of the 500 people attending you should limit the bar to beer & wine to avoid the high cost of mixed drink prices.
At no point should you have a "schedule" of pricing at the bar where the guests will have to switch how they pay, what they drink and what is available during an event.
Your guest count for the wedding should be the amount of people you can afford to treat to a wonderful evening, not as many people as you can manage while giving them a sub par event.
Best of luck on the planning process, it is never easy to make any of these decisions but I think you have lots of options available to remedy the issue.
