Asking wedding guests to pay for their own meal

The groom and I will have dinner with our parents following the wedding ceremony. We want to invite the guests of the ceremony to join us, but they will have to pay for their own meal. Is it proper to ask the guest to pay for their own meal?

No, it is never polite to invite a guest and ask them to pay. You may only invite those you can afford to accommodate.
