We're having a formal ceremony at noon followed by a reception at a nice nearby hotel until 5pm. We'll have a plated lunch. I'm wondering if it's appropriate to have a cocktail hour from say 1-2pm and then have the lunch at 2 or 2:30. We don't want to seem as though we're encouraging heavy afternoon drinking, but is a bar (maybe beer, wine, signature drink) and some snacks okay before lunch? Otherwise we'll just go straight to lunch.

Generally the cocktail hour is provided to give the bridal party time to get the formal pictures and take a breath before greeting their guests at the reception. If you don't need that time, you could go directly to the lunch. If you do need that time, I would agree that hors d' oeuvres with beer and wine would be appropriate for your waiting guests.
