     Closing an Open Bar

Is it customary to close an open bar an hour before the end of the reception? We would then have a coffee and cake bar for guests. A friend said it was ill-mannered to shut a bar down...

Thanks.

You can close the bar at any time you see fit. What you are proposing sounds appropriate and makes good sense since closing an hour before guests begin to leave may give them time to sober up a bit.
