Do we have to serve a meal at reception only event?

We plan to be married by the JP, then have a reception for family and friends a week or two later. This decision is based on a tight budget as we will have no monetary support from parents. Can we serve appetizers only at this type of reception, or do we need to serve a meal? Thank you!!

Parents are no longer obligated or expected to pay for their childrens weddings. It seems many of us are having to toghten pur belts these days.

Host the reception at a time when guests won't expect a full meal.
