Do we need to have assigned seating at reception tables?

We would like to have long tables at our reception rather than rounds, but I am having a problem with the table cards for the guests. Since each table will hold about 25 guests, is it still appropriate to assign a guest to a table but have them seat themselves? Or, do we need to use actual place cards, assigning a specific seat to each guest? I would prefer the former, but am worried it may be a bit chaotic.

Many thanks for any input.
