How much food for hors d'oeuvres reception

I am hosting an hors d'oeuvres reception for 100 people at 7pm. How many pieces do you think I will need? The hotel suggests 1200, which seems high to me!

It totally depends on how long your reception is, what the hors d'oeuvres are and what else is being offered. If you're having a four-hour reception beginning at 7 PM and you expect 12 smaller pieces per person to satisfactorily feed each person with nothing else except cake available, you may be grossly underestimating. If it's two hours long and you're also having cake, then it may be just fine. One of the worst possible things you can do at a reception is run out of food.

I assume you carefully selected your hotel and their catering staff. They are the experts in their field - it is something to discuss with them critically, but ultimately, you may need to have faith in the professionals you chose. I wish you the best.
