In-laws won't let me eliminate the open bar from reception

We are on a very tight budget for our wedding and I want to eliminate the open bar option. We have already cut the guest list twice, cut down on the number of entree choices and switched from an evening to afternoon wedding and reception. We are still going to come up about one thousand over budget with the open bar. None of us are big drinkers. His family, on the other hand, insists that there must be an open bar. They have made no offer to pay for it. Is is rude to ask them?

I'd let the groom speak to his parents alone. Ask him to tell them that you are paying for the wedding and are on a limited budget. Having them insisting on an open bar puts you in an impossible position and way over budget and you simply cannot afford it. Period. If they offer to kick in, great. If not, perhaps you could serve just beer and wine or limit alcoholic beverages to just the cocktail hour. Let the groom's parents know if you're doing that. It may get them off your back.

I completely agree. This is definitely something your fiance should belly up to the bar to speak to his parents.

Afternoon weddings don't really require an open bar anyway. Wink
