Inviting guests to ceremony but not to reception

We want only close family/friends at our reception, but we have so many friends that want to be a part of the event. Since we have 2 hours between the wedding and reception, we thought we would open the church basement for coffee and cake. Would it be impolite to invite some people to the wedding and stay for coffee but have only family and close friends at the reception?

Dear Aklich,

No. The only time the open church wedding/reception is proper is when you are not hosting a reception, but perhaps a dinner for family and a very few close friends. This would be very impolite for the wedding guests, as a wedding is a gift giving event. So, in affect you are inviting guests to give you a gift, but not thanking them by inviting them to celebrate at your party.

Best wishes,
