     Irish wedding tradition

Hello,

I recently attended a wedding where the bride and groom shared an irish tradition (I believe) at the end of the reception. All the guests gathered around in a circle and the couple came around to everyone and thanked them for attending. I have been trying to find some info on this, yet I am not having a lot of luck. Can anyine help?

thanks,

Patrick

Dear Patrick:

I don't know if this is what you saw but there are two Scottish wedding traditions I know of.

One is where the groom takes off his tartan sash (colorful) that represents his clan or family at the end of the ceremony. He places it over the bride w/the sash going diagonally across her gown. It symbolizes the welcoming of her into his family.

The second is for the Scottish wedding reception. It features high energy music (normally including bagpipes) to keep the participants engaged in set dancing and celebration.

If this is not the case, it could just be that the couple wanted to do something special for their guests.

I hope this helps.

A good resource for Irish Wedding Traditions can be found in a book called the "Traditional Irish Wedding" by Bridget Haggerty. For more information, visit http://www.ireland-information.com/articles/irishweddingtraditions.htm
