My fiance and I are getting married in a beautiful old church in an historic part of the city. We are thinking about having the reception at the home of my future in-laws. My concern is the location of the ceremony is much more elaborate than the location of the reception...they don't seem to go together very well. The purpose of the reception location is mostly due to cost. This is a second marriage for us both, there are certain aspects of the wedding we would like to spend more money on and the reception site isn't one of them.

Dear Rreed,
Perhaps this could be held during the day to help with the difference in formality. Plus, there are inexpensive ways to add a bit of formality to your reception site. I'm not the best person to make those suggestions though.

The reception site may not be where you want to spend the money but you are asking people to come to witness the two of you getting married. So, in addition to being concerned with formality, you do want to choose a site that has your guests' comfort in mind, along with needing said site to fit into your budget.
Your home wedding reception could be made to be formal, but it will take some work and it will not be cheap. Where you might save money in an actual site fee, you more than make up for, and spend by having to rent items. For instance, you may need: a tent, temporary subfloor, if the ground is not even, depending on the time of year/day, lighting, heating and cooling could be issues, not to mention any rental items you may need such as tables, chairs, linen, portable outlets, catering needs, etc. There are other little creature comforts to think about that an actual venue would have such as providing more than just one or two bathrooms for the women and gents, clean up, parking, etc. Rhonda Allen, Bridal Consultant New Beginnings Weddings
