The time of the wedding and the reception are still in question. The reverend has requested that it be an evening event. We have three children at home and are in the process of remodeling our home (when finished we plan to build a home) so our finances are tight. The cake may be more than the dress, but would like to only have cake and punch only at the reception in the church kitchen/reception hall. So if we do not provide a meal what time would be appropriate? My fiancé has always home-made all the children’s birthday cakes. Should we make our own cake?

Dear Palordy,
You can make your own cake. This is fine. But, you would have to schedule your wedding during a time guests would not expect a meal, mid-morning or early afternoon may be best.
