     Potluck reception food

My daughter and her boyfriend dropped a bomb. They are planning an August wedding which gives them 3 months to plan. Money is tight with our family. My husband has a medical problem and is unable to work at the moment. Neither bride nor groom are "rich". It will be DIY wedding. I'm making the dresses for the bride and bridesmaids as well as the flower arrangements. My other daughter will be making the cake. They will have both the ceremony and reception in the back yard. They asked my opinion about a "potluck" reception. I think it a good idea, since only close family and friend will be attending anyway. Should they suggest what the guest should bring or leave it up to the guests?

Dear BarbMatt,

A potluck is not appropriate for a reception unless this is a very small event with only family in attendance. It would be best that they host the event they can afford to host. They can host a cake and beverage reception early in the day when guests do not expect a meal.

We don't ever ask our guests to bring the party with them.

Best wishes,
