     Protocol on having to cancel

Hi

A friend of mine got married on a Carribean island, just her and her fiance went. They are having a reception in a couple of weeks & I replied that I would attend. However, I recently found out that I cannot go. I did go to her shower that actually was held upon her return & brought a small gift.

My question is since Im cancelling after the rsvp date, Im aware that I may be stiffing them with a plate cost. I mentioned that I would send them a "card/gift". The location is not a fancy nor expensive place, so if I send them a monetary gift in the card, then it should be ok, right? I realize gifts are not mandatory, but since im canceling after the rsvpdate, Im alittle confused on the protocol.

THANKS!!

Dear Thoughtful Friend,

Wow! You are a very thoughtful person. Most people don't think of these things.

There really is no protocol about this because these things happen everyday and it is no one's fault. For example, how could we expect someone who must cancel if they are ill and have a stay in a hospital? So, this is a personal decision. You are not expected or obligated to send anything. But, it is a very nice gesture.

Best wishes,
