     Providing cocktail hour snacks?

Hi,

We are having a small wedding around 75 guests. We are getting married and having the reception at the same location. We are getting married at 430 and it is a civil ceremony so we anticipate that it will take no longer than a half hour. The venue is a golf club lodge so afterwards the wedding party will be going to waterfall on the course for pictures. We hope to serve dinner at 6-630. We will also be serving a nightime buffet. The bar is cash for alcoholic beverages although we are providing wine during the dinner. 90% of our guests are under 25 since we have no extended family available to attend, so they would drink us out of house and home, and they are all good friends and completely understand why we can't have an open bar.

My question is should we be putting out some sort of light platters perhaps veggies and fruit while we have our pictures taken?

Dear Snacking,

Yes, if you keep your guests waiting, they should be entertained and fed.

It is considered very impolite to invite guests and expect them to pay for anything. A cash bar is a very big no-no. It is much better to host the event you can afford to host. Perhaps you could only provide beer and wine. This should keep your costs down.

Best wishes,

I agree. You could also provide specialty non-alcoholic drinks. They are inexpensive, look pretty and guests will not really care that they don't have alcohol because they will look exotic:-)

Thank you for the reply. Actually in the area we live in, atlantic provinces of canada, open bar is not very common, I learned this when I was venue shopping. Also our friends would rather be a part of our special day, and have the option of buying hard liquor than to be left out or limited to wine or beer.
