I have a question regarding reception timing. I have searched other posts so I hope this is not something that you have already answered. I am helping my son and his fiance plan their wedding reception. We were thinking of having a cocktails, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and dancing beginning around 7:30 p.m. Other wedding websites that I have been on state that a "cocktail reception" should be held between the hours of 4-7 p.m. (not later at night as we were thinking). It seems that you have answered others that the time we wanted (after 7 p.m.) would be OK. Just need to know if this is correct. We live in a small town so pretty much anything goes anyway. Thanks.
Are you looking to have both a cocktail and a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception? Or, this going to be a cocktail reception serving heavy hors d'oeuvres? Rhonda Allen, Bridal Consultant New Beginnings Weddings
Can you explain the difference in the two? No, we do not plan to just have cocktails if that is what you are asking, so I guess it's the first one, a cocktail AND heavy hors d'oeuvres reception. Again, we are wondering about the time factor. Would there be a difference in the two? I guess I am confused by your question. Thank you.
A cocktail hour where cheese, crackers, vegetables and meats are being served, with a heavy hors d'ouevre reception following, is two events. If you are having a cocktail style reception where there is no pre-assigned seating, drinks, along with heavy hors d'ouevres are being served, that is one event.
Now, to answer to your question. If the reception is going to be more than three to four hours in duraton and starts at 7:00 p.m., full meals should be served to the guests. Also, heavy hors d'ouevres more often than not end up being quite expensive because guests will consume more since they know they aren't going to have a complete meal.
That being said, given what you plan on serving, the time you have selected for the cocktail reception will work. Rhonda Allen, Bridal Consultant New Beginnings Weddings
