     Wedding reception questions  

I am having a small wedding reception (less than 50). I do not want to have a DJ at the reception because I know that most of my family and my fiancee's family will not dance, however, what does a reception w/o a DJ look like? Do I just have music in the background? Who will call the shots like when to cut the cake, etc..I have only been to weddings where there was a DJ.

Dear Wosie22,

You did not mention if you will have a photographer or a caterer. If you have either, they could announce the events you want set up. If you have neither, ask one of the groomsmen or fathers to announce for you. Not the ideal situation. Also, I think you'd be more comfortable with some sort of back up music.

A reception without a DJ is like going to one of those "multi-level marketing" sales meeting dinners, where everyone is dressed up and wondering why, when they've already heard the same story before....BORING!

A DJ is vital to coordinating the timing of your event --providing the equipment necessary to make announcements (wireless microphones), help get the crowd loosened up so they enjoy themselves (whether young or old), cue the photographer or family member so important scenes are captured on film, etc.

Don't skimp on the photos or the MC/DJ. If you must, cut back on something else. Remember: Statistics show that 40% of wedding funds are spent on the food and beverages, that doesn't include the venue rental, flowers, etc.

The photos and DJ represent "memories", which are the most important aspect of the reception. Most MC/DJs will work with you to prepare a "play list" so you don't have to worry that the music will flow smoothly. They are vital to coordinating the timing of your event --providing the equipment necessary for you or they to make announcements (wireless microphones), let your guests use the microphone for making toasts, help get the crowd loosened up so they enjoy themselves, cue the photographer or family member so important scenes are captured on film.

Don't underestimate your family and friends regarding their capacity for having fun. They just might surprise when given the opportunity to let their hair down and strut their stuff.

Please don't assume that your guests won't want music or the opportunity to dance. Our experience has shown otherwise. Quite often, it's only at events such as yours that they're given the chance to let loose and have some serious fun celebrating.
