When to schedule the Wedding Reception

Our daughter and her fiance began dating June 2005. They became engaged August 2005 and are planning to be married in the Caribbean sometime between December 23-December 28, 2005. I would like to plan a wedding reception for them. Neither of them cared if they had one, then, he said it was up to her. She and I discussed December 30 (Friday evening). The fiance would rather January 7, 2006. I can tell this has put a tremendous amount of pressure on her. After shopping for and purchasing her wedding dress, which turned out to be simple Smile, she and I were talking on the phone and I told her I would begin calling to reserve the reception hall tomorrow. She informed me now, they were thinking January 14, 2006.

Please advise how long we should wait before having the wedding reception as she and her fiance think they can keep the marriage secret until then. I explained to them, the invitation would give them away. I was thinking it could be announced as a surprise reception but I know this will not be kept secret. She is already glowing.

Please advise.

Dear MOB,

There really is no official time line. You can host a reception any time within the first year of the wedding. A surprise reception would be fun for the guests, but it may be difficult to convince guests to come. They may consider a wedding reception more important than a simple party.

Good luck!
