When to tip the maître d' - before or after the wedding?
I am getting married in September. When is the best time to tip the maître d'? Should it be before or after the wedding reception? My thoughts are if we tip him/her before the event and the tip is not up to his/her standards he/she may not do the best job and if we tip him/her after he/she may do a great job in anticipation for a great tip in return. We are already paying 20.5 percent in gratuity, but we plan on tipping either way. Your thoughts on this topic would be really appreciated and so helpful.
Thanks!

If there is already a gratuity tacked on to the bill then that should be all the tipping necessary. However, if the maître d' does an over the top job and you want to tip further then do so after the reception is over. Remember that the definition of tipping is: A gift of money given to a servant or waiter in return for service performed well. So, you wouldn't know if he performed well until after the event.
