Who gets the final say?

     Who gets the final say?

My mother will be preparing all the food for my reception, and we had planned on holding it in the fellowship hall of the church where the wedding will be performed. My fiance, on learning that alcohol cannot be served here, has demanded that we find a different venue for the reception. There are two problems with this. First, I really don't want to serve alcohol. I think several members of my family will be offended if alcohol is served, and I don't want to alienate anyone on my special day. Second, my family cannot afford to hold the wedding reception anywhere but at the church. My fiance says he will ask his parents to pay for the venue, but I (and my mother) think this is insulting to our family, suggesting that we are too poor to give a classy reception. So my question is, who should have the final say on where we have the reception?

Dear Typhoidsarah,

Today the couple hosts and is expected to pay for the entire event. Expecting parents to cover all of the costs is 'so last century'. Your wedding and reception should be planned by you two, not your parents even if they are paying. So, if your fiance wants alcohol at the reception, it is worth discussing. Of course, this means that both of you should be paying for the reception site.

Best wishes,
