centerpieces and seating for cocktail wedding reception

Hi there!

I am hosting a cocktail wedding reception. What centerpieces will go well with a cocktail party or do I even need to use centerpieces. Also, I was thinking of putting the tables around the dance floor -- is this appropriate? How do I make it welcoming without looking cheap?

Dear Rgunn,

When I have done cocktail receptions, we have used a combination of the tall cocktail tables with no chairs and a few of the regular tables for seating. Use the tall tables around the dance floor for dancers to put their glasses, etc. and the seating of to the end or side. Use simple centerpieces with candles and maybe a single bud vase.

Will you be providing a band or a DJ? Depending on the venue and spacing needs for music, rather than circling the dance floor you might consider having the tables opposite the DJ or band. The dancers will help provide a buffer for those persons who want to chat rather than dance, as well as an opportunity to hear each other.

Great idea about the tall tables. Linen covered tables provide a much more elegant look than leaving wood tables bare. If you're planning on having the reception longer than an hour or two, please consider providing enough chairs to accommodate tired legs and feet.

Round broad based candles (more stable than tapers), could be used as center pieces, providing a romantic atmosphere at the same time.
