     color or theme ideas-ocean/fall

I am planning an October 1 wedding in Nova Scotia. The wedding is to be in an 1800's church and the reception in a rustic seaside resort. The dining area is all windows overlooking the ocean. I am looking for ideas to tie together the fall season with the ocean and something that fits with both the church and the reception site-ie colors, decorartions, theme ideas etc. Being in early October it is not beach kind of weather but a bit early for the leaves to be changing color. Any ideas? thanks!

Dear Bride,

I am the tuxedo expert and I can only share my opinions with regard to dress for the men. I would suggest the cutaway jackets with ascots in charcoal grey for the guys and the groom to tie in the 1800's era.

SmileWell this is right up my alley. I am a Cape Cod florist. Sounds like you have an amazing venue...How lucky you are! Fall is a great time for the beach...You may not want to swim but it is never prettier to look at. All the windblown grasses, and elegant textures are at their peak!
I would suggest you find a florist that is a year round local..They will be able to appreciate what they have and capitalise on the natural beauty of the area. If you were in my hands I would try to show you all sorts of textural
elements. Long clusters of bear grass, Sea lavender, hypericum berries and rose hips, drippy greens, reddening ivy and bare branches. You can use any color theme you like as long as you choose colors that have a burnished look. There are so many nice options. One to certainly ask for is the P. G. hydrangea (Paniculata Grandifloria if you need to know!) It is a cone shaped ivory but at that time of year it begins to turn pink to burgundy. Absolutely stunning! There is a breed of roses with the sur name "curiosa " at the end..they all have lovley burnished edges...and come in several different colors. Also in good season that time of year are dahlias, amaranth, all sorts of happy sunflowers in the fall tones of wine and burgundy, Also delphinium is near it fall peak with all shades of blue to lilac and soft dull pink. (I am throwing a lot of names at you. To see what I mean, look in a seed catalogue or on the internet ...you can find photos...) For containers you might use clear glass with stones from the beach in the bottom for extra interest. I doubt they have a lot of seashells on Nova Scotia but you could use ocean polished stones gathered at the beach for place cards or to weigh place cards. Bouttionneires could be a loop of beach grass with a touch of sea lavender. Ok..I think you get the idea!!! Old fashioned English Garden style flowers have no boundaries...Use what is really in season and have a great time..Have a lovley day and happily ever after!

What great ideas! I can't wait to look up some of these flowers to see what they look like! I was thinking of using a rusty/orange to represent the fall and a blue of some sort to represent the ocean but was not sure how to work them together and what tones or hues to use. This would mainly be for the flowers but how else could I use those colors to decorate and do you think they would work together?

Thanks so much-you got me really thinking and very excited!!!

WinkWell glad I got your attention. There are not a lot of truly blue flowers but you can get blue Hydrangea that is beginning to bronze up. There is also a type of sea lavender called blue streak that would be good, and use small sprays of blue delphinium. Oranges and blues are georgeous together..no problem..that will take care of itself.
Ask to see solidago (sterile goldenrod,)rudebeckia, millett...Some rose colors to look at in the gold and orange range are Sari, Leonidas, Konfetti, Fancy Amazone, and Terracotta. As far as other colors through the wedding I would probably stick with a soft fairly neutral color toward the fall shades. Let blue just be the accent. It will be your ocean background color anyway...The oranges will be your primary. texture..burnished colors...Go WEEDS!!!
All the best...Sue
