My daughter is getting married in Jamaica with only a few very close relatives and friends, 6, they want to have a party when they return home to celebrate their marriage. What is the etiquette regarding such a party? Do you have cake and presents? My daughter wants to send out the invitations to the party now because it will summer and people may come from far away and need to plan for time off. The wedding is in May. I am feeling akward about all this and not sure what to do.

Dear Mother of the bride,

Please do not feel awkward. This is very common and popular now. But, sending the invitations to her reception, yes it can be a reception, now is too early. It would be best to send the invitations either shortly after the wedding announcements or instead of the wedding announcements. Either way you are announcing your daughter's wedding and inviting guests to her reception at the same time.

Normally we would not want to send the invitations so early because our guests would forget it. However, if she is correct that many will have to travel, this is a valid reason to send them very early.

This reception could be just the same as a reception that is held directly after her wedding. She can wear her dress and have her cake and eat it too.

Please do not list gift registries on the reception invitation.

Best wishes,
