My brother, who lives in Australia, is getting married this Aug. at the home of my sister. There will be a brief ceremony (the official wedding will take place in Aust.) with a reception to follow. How do we let the guests know, without being too tacky, that cash, visa cards, etc would be the best gift to get my brother and new sister-in-law. It would be too difficult and expensive to haul everything back to Australia and the cash would help defray some of the travel costs. This is a second marriage for both. Thanks for any ideas.

Re: [marksgirl162] Asking for cash as a wedding gift

Dear Marksgirl,
Actually, this really isn't proper. It would be fine to have a second wedding reception here. But, that wouldn't be a gift giving event. Guests may wish to give, though, and if they asked what the couple would like, they could be informed of their wish for cash. Many guests just shut down when they hear that, so the guest may opt not to give anything.
If they marry here, then they are married. It really doesn't matter what type of wedding. Another ceremony wouldn't be a wedding. So, it is important that they decide where they wish to be married, as it only happens once. If they insist on two wedding ceremonies, which isn't proper, it just may appear as if they are trying to garner the most wedding gifts possible.

Thanks for your help, Rebecca. At least I know that I won't be out of place saying cash if someone asks. FYI, to get my future sister-in-law in the county so they can marry...it is just easier legally to get married there first and then renew their vows in front of famliy here. Thanks again.

Cool. A renewal is just fine. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
