     post wedding reception

Due to an unplanned pregnancy, my daughter and son in law were married at a small, family only ceremony at our house. Now that the baby is here, we would like to have a reception so all of our friends and loved ones can join in the celebration. We are planning dinner and music. Since we already had a small reception right after the wedding with cake, etc. do you have any suggestions on what else should be involved in this type of reception? Thanks.

Dear Kwhite,

A wedding reception normally includes the first dance, toasts, cake cutting and bouquet toss. In your case you can include any or all.

Agreed. You can have most of the typical reception you wish. You just may want to avoid the garter and bouquet toss because the two of them have been married for a while. The cake cutting may be revised also. This is supposed to be a statement of a newly married couple. So, you may want to create some new meaning here. Perhaps the couple could cut the cake for all of the guests.

Enjoy!

I respectfully disagree with Nancy and Rebecca - a first!

To hold a party to celebrate this couples marriage is terrific, especially in this day and age where more and more couples are choosing not to marry, but to incorporate the garter and bouquet toss, and all of those other traditions seems a little silly to me. I think that ship has sailed.

Just host a party that would be typical for any other milestone celebration, like an anniversary party.

Enjoy!
