proper time for wedding reception with no meal

I'm trying to decide what time to have my wedding. We're on a tight budget and can't afford a sit down dinner. I know that if you have a wedding at certain times of the day you should have a sit down dinner. We would like to serve hors d'oeuvres and have dancing. What would be an appropriate time for our wedding to begin?

Dear Tight Budget,

If you have hors d'oeuvres, some may expect alcohol and that would add to your costs. So, it may be best, since you also want dancing, to host this in the early afternoon, perhaps 2pm. You could offer a variety of desserts, punch, coffee, and tea. This would be inexpensive and would keep your guest around for the toasts and dancing.

Cold cuts, rolls, and a variety of salads would be an option also. But, this would probably be more expensive.

You will want some sort of sparkler for the toasts. One glass per person is fine.

Best wishes,
