We plan on having a simple cake and punch reception following our early afternoon ceremony. What I haven't thought of (and what was brought to my attention by reading through the forum) was that we do not have any plans for any sort of toasts. Do we need to have bride and groom champagne flutes? Can we substitute a sparkling juice? If we have flutes, then do the guests need them? Or do we need any of this at all? The ceremony is very very simple...and our thoughts were to have a simple reception where we could visit with family and friends around the cutting of the cake. We will take gifts home with us and open them at a later time - I learned that from the forum, too, don't open gifts at the reception! Thank you for being so helpful and such a great source of information!

Dear TXBRIDE,
Yes you can use sparkling cider or forego the toasts entirely. Your reception sounds very informal and I would be very surprised is impromptu toasts don't just happen at which time you toast with what's in your hand. If you want to do it formally, ask your bestman to be prepared and again just drink what's in your hand.

Bridal couple toasting etiquette:
While your friends and family are toasting your good fortune, you get to sit and smile. No toasting to yourselves! What? You want a sip of champagne? Well then, you should get up and return a toast. Returned toasts should be even briefer than the original toast.
