Using varied glassware for wedding reception

My fiance and I are planning a masquerade reception that's less venetian and more carnival with tons of color and variance in our centerpieces (those are an entirely different question, though Smile. My fiance wanted to use a bunch of different glassware in our color theme to add a whimsical touch but someone suggested that to be "tacky." You know, different wine glass shapes and stems and lots of color. I haven't the faintest clue what tacky means but I gather it's unpleasant. I'd appreciate any advice I recieve on this matter, be it "No, go clear and uniform!" Thank you.
