My parents are divorced and have a very bitter relationship. My relationship with my father is rocky and he has been abusive in the past, which has resulted in me having to spend a long time away from the family. I don't want to make relationships worse, but my partner and I are nervous about my father making a speech at the reception. What do you suggest?

Don't have him make a speech at your reception. You may choose who gives toasts and who speaks on behalf of your family (if anyone at all). Make an itinerary in advance with just the speeches you want to hear (perhaps Best Man and Maid of Honor) and skip the rest. No need to make an already awkward situation even worse. I couldn't agree more. You two are in charge this day.
Personal note: if your father has been abusive and could be again, you are not obligated to include him. You shouldn't feel threatened on your wedding day. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
