     Wedding Blessing

I have just been asked to give the blessing at my uncle's wedding reception, which is just under two weeks away. While I am thrilled and honored, I am unsure of where to begin. I want to be prepared, but I am a little confused on what a traditional blessing is. Is it a prayer? A speech? Or a toast? Any suggestions of where to begin or any helpful resources would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I would ask your uncle to clarify whether he is asking you to give a blessing over the food (also traditional) or a toast/blessing for his and his wife's marriage and life to come. Then you can go from there....

Thanks for your advice! I just spoke to my Aunt-to-be and she said she'd like it to be a both a blessing for them and a blessing over the food. The Best Man will be toasting right before me. While we are not what I would consider a "religious family", we are spiritual. Are there any prayers or blessings you could recommend? Thanks again!

The best blessings come from the heart. I would suggest that you keep a good portion of what you say personal. That would be the most endearing. Then you can follow with a more formal blessing over the food.

Here is one that I wrote:

We give thanks for this blessed day,

and the joining of this man and woman.

Now in the sharing and breaking of bread together,

may we learn to hear the song of the universe in all that we encounter. Amen.

Here is another:

For health and food

For love and friends

For this we give thanks, Dear God.

Blessings, (Pun intended!)
