What's the difference between a toast and a speech?

Hello,
I tried to search through old posts to find an answer, but I could not find anything that answers my question.

I am very confused about wedding toasts and speeches. What is the difference between a toast and a speech? I met with our DJ last week and he said we need someone to do a toast before dinner. I thought we all just sat down, had dinner, and then during dessert speeches begin. What is usually said in a toast, and who is suppose to say this? Do you omit speeches if you are doing a toast, or are they the same thing?
Thank you

Dear Amcs,

Most people use the words toast and speech to mean the same thing. A toast is supposed to be more of a very short speech, such as: Let's all raise our glasses to a beautiful couple. But, I believe your DJ was referring to a speech. The speeches usually begin either right before dinner or directly at the beginning.

Best wishes,
