     Changing Engagement ring before wedding

My sister gave her son her engagement ring. He had the engagement ring either reset or resized. They were engaged almost a year ago. They are going to be married at the end July of this year.

Recently her mother gave them her wedding ring set. They are now planning to reset the engagement ring using the other set. I think that his mother is going to be upset when she finds out about the "upgrade". It almost seems that they are saying "what you gave us is not good enough".

I apologize. My question is, is this acceptable, to change the engagement ring a year later? I could see it not being an issue if it was done at the same time or my nephew had purchased the complete ring on his own but my sister offered her ring to him years ago.

Dear MOB,

This is fine and very common. Many alter rings to suit them. The ring was a gift, so they can do anything with it they wish. After all it is theirs now.

Best wishes,
