Do I need a ring for the proposal

I'm definitely clueless on this whole engagement ring/wedding ring thing! I want to propose to my girlfriend but I am unaware of how many rings I need to purchase. Do I need an engagement ring for when I propose and then a wedding ring for at the actual wedding? Please help

You don't actually need rings. But, it is customary to present the woman with a ring at the proposal and then a wedding band for the ring ceremony, if you are having one.
