     Engagement Settings

I was looking into buying the mount and diamond separately for my engagement ring. The setting I am most interested in says that it fits a 1/2 carat center stone. I know that the diamond can be more than .5 carats, maybe up to .6, but would a .7 or .72 put too much strain on the prongs?

Hi, Bama,

You are right. A diamond that is significantly larger such as a 0.70 carat diamond, can put a bit of a strain on a 0.50 mounting. You can go up slightly larger, perhaps a 0.55 or slightly larger, but not much larger without compromising the quality of the setting. You may want to ask the jeweler who you are purchasing from what the largest size is that the prongs will take.

But a better option yet, may be to change the prongs to accomodate a larger stone, especially if they are standard plain prongs--they can usually be changed by a professional jeweler.

Ask the jeweler you are considering purchasing from if they can change the prongs without damaging the ring or if they cannot, whether your local jeweler would be able to change the prongs to fit a larger diamond.

Hope you find the right setting!
