     Family engagement ring

My mother passed away 30 years ago, and my father has told me that her engagement ring is available to me if I want it. Would it be OK to use the ring (after it is polished, of course)? What if I want to add to the ring, so that it has a personal touch for my fiance?

It would be lovely to present this ring, and perfectly fine as per etiquette. In fact, I will be doing the same with my engagement ring from my deceased husband. Just be sure that your girlfriend will like it since this is a very personal item. If you intend to make changes to the ring please consult your dad. He may not want the ring to be altered.
