My boyfriend is currently in Army boot camp and wants me to look at engagement rings that I might like for when he gets back. After spending some time with his mother, she mentioned that he had told her that. She then asked if I would be interested in having his great-grandmother's engagement ring. I was thrilled by this and very honored. However, I was curious if it would be improper to have the heirloom ring soldered to my future wedding ring. Before this, I had always planned on wearing my engagement ring and wedding ring soldered together. Would this be wrong? His mother and I had already established that should anything (divorce) happen between us that the ring would remain in his family, which I understand completely. Anyway, I was simply curious about whether or not I could wear it soldered to my wedding band once we are married. Thank you!

First be sure that your boyfriend wants you to have the heirloom ring. You said his mom suggested it, but didn't mention if she discussed this with her son. This should be his decision to offer the ring, and yours to accept. Whether or not the ring should/could be soldered should be discussed between all of you since the rings could become damaged if you ever wanted to separate them. I would bring the rings to a jeweler to get an expert opinion.
