How much should be spent on wedding rings

The ring I want I feel is a little pricey. What I would LOVE is a 1.3 carat pear shape diamond in an antique looking band (sort of like Tacori but not). I want my ring and band to be bought together so they go well. I have heard that you spend 3 months salary on the ring which means my boyfriend would be spending about $7000. Is it possible for him to get the whole thing on this price? He feels like it's so much but there really is nothing else I love the way I love the pear shape. Also what is the best way to pay for the ring? And how much does it usually cost to get it insured?? I feel a little bad but this is my dream ring and I know it is going to be expensive but he has no money in savings and I don't know how long it would take for him to save this money.

Thanks in advance,
Jessica

Hi, Jfourth,

This is purely my opinion, but $7,000 is a lot to pay for a young man with little or no savings making approx. $30,000 or less a year.

This is a little difficult, I understand, because having the ring of your dreams would be great, and it is a life-time purchase, so I usually advise purchasing up rather than down if it can be afforded. But I also advise not going too far into debt at the start of a new marriage. Statistically finances can be a real and serious stress, especially for newly married couples.

One option is seeing if you can find the same design in a smaller carat weight such as a 0.75 carat or just under 1.00 carat which could shave a few thousand off of the price by just reducing the diamond size slightly.

For payment, I highly recommend paying with a credit card over any other payment method and calling your credit card company before your purchase to find out what kind of protection they give you in case the ring is not what you expected or in case you never receive your ring. Most credit card companies give you the right to dispute any charge within a reasonable time (usually 30 or 60 days, and sometimes longer) and they heavily favor you -- their customer -- rather than the company you purchase from.

As for insurance, that is something you will need to ask your insurance company -- often the same company who insures your house or car can also insure your diamond ring.

Hope this information helps! Get the ring you love, but keep the long-term happiness of your relationship in mind 1st and foremost!

The custom that a person should spend that much on a ring was begun by a jewelry company early in the last century. It is not a fact. Plus, these days both of you are equally financially responsible for all wedding costs, even though the wedding ring is his gift to you. So, think this through. You really should be paying for an expensive ring with him. It isn't fair to put the burden completely on his shoulders.
