Importance of an ER Diamond grading report?

Hello,

Ive been reading a lot of this forum recently and its really a great resource for all things wedding related!

My question relates to engagement rings. I am currently searching for engagement rings for my wonderful longtime girlfriend. I find that a decent amount of jewelers offer diamonds that come with grading reports, most of the time from GIA.

How important is it to get a diamond that has a grading report? It would seem that those diamonds which do not come with grading reports tends to be marginally less, however the price difference is not a deal-breaker by a long shot. My instinct tells me to go with a diamond with a grading report so I know what im getting.

Is a jewelers appraisal a suitable substitute for a grading report? Is there any particular grading report that stands out from the others as more respected or trustworthy?

Are there any other red flags I should watch out for while diamond shopping?

There is so much information to take in through this whole process. I really appreciate any insight you can provide me.

Thanks!

Hi,

Depending on the price difference, a GIA graded diamond is clearly a better option as you can be certain about the diamond's quality.

There really are no red flags if it is a GIA graded diamond that comes with a report.

I recommend checking out GIA's website.

That being said, you can also get a non-certified diamond from a reputable jeweler for a bit less than a graded one. They key is whether or not you are able to trust that jeweler to get a non-certified stone and if the company has good feedback rating.

Hope that helps.
