Informing Parents When Giving a Promise Ring

My son and his girlfriend have talked about getting married and he is giving her a promise ring for Christmas. It doesn't look like a typical promise ring, it looks more like it could be a regular engagement ring. Should he let her parents know, or talk to her father, like he would if he was asking her father to marry her?

Thanks,

V

Dear V,

Men really shouldn't ask for a lady's hand these days. Women can decide for themselves. So, if they are discussing marriage and your son has, or will, give the young lady a ring, it would be best if she discusses it with her family. She decides how she wishes to approach the subject.

Best wishes,

Be careful about asking to marry. Your son puts himself and his girlfriend in a tough spot if her father says so. So, when contemplating marriage I think it's sweet to speak to the parents and announce it to them first. But, this isn't an engagement so, his girl could simply explain the meaning of the ring.
