Platinum vs. yellow gold for wedding bands

I have always worn yellow gold jewelry, but I don't think yellow gold would look as good on my boyfriend as silver or platinum. He suggested platinum engagement and wedding rings because of its durability. I like the idea, and do like the look of platinum. But I was just wondering, would it be okay for me to wear platinum wedding rings along with other yellow gold jewelry, or would I need to switch things up altogether and turn to silver?

Hi.

You really have several options here:

(1) Platinum
(2) Yellow Gold w/ Platinum Combination
(3) White Gold

If you prefer to keep your yellow gold ring, and not switch to platinum, there are a lot of designs that are made in a two-tone configuration, including yellow gold and platinum. Usually this is done with 18k yellow gold and platinum. These make for really beautiful rings and can compliment both the yellow and white look.

Keep in mind that platinum is pretty pricey in comparison to gold -- sometimes 3-4 times more expensive. But platinum is an incredible metal and will be much more durable than gold in the long term.

Your other option if you want a "white" look is white gold, not silver. White gold is the more affordable alternative to platinum -- although, it will behave more like gold than platinum -- and will require maintenance over the years.

Just some options for you -- but you probably will not need to change your ring, unless your fiance decides on an all platinum ring if you want to match.
