Proposing soon after another engagement in the family

I am inquiring on the behalf of a male friend of mine. He has been planning to propose to his girlfriend of over two years for sometime now. He has been planning to ask her the day after Thanksgiving. While this plan has been in the works for months, he has just discovered that 5 days ago, his girlfriend's brother proposed to his own girlfriend. My friend is worried that he will seem disrespectful if he proposes so closely to his girlfriend's brother's engagement, and that it will seemed forced. He was curious what proper ettiquette would be for this situation. Thank you!

Dear Lemp,

It is very nice to hear of someone so concerned for others, but it is fine to ask her now. He could simply state that he had been waiting for a special time to ask. That seems reasonable, logical, and not forced.

Best wishes,
