My fiance and I got engaged 5 weeks ago. The ring, which we picked out together and he bought, is absolutely beautiful and we both agree the look of it not only suits me, but is a beautiful symbol of our relationship - bold, simple and strong. Although I had never really noticed other women's engagements rings before, I'm now realizing that the diamond is relatively large, in comparison to the rings worn by my colleagues and friends (it is 1.2 carats - not a killer, but big enough). I'm now becoming quite embarrassed by the comments people around me are making. I don't mind my close friends commenting on the size. But what is the proper response to acquaintances making less than tactful comment about how big the diamond is? "Thank you" doesn't seem to be cutting it. At one point, I got so fed up, I told a colleague that I called it my "we have no cars and no kids so we can afford a honkin' diamond" ring. There must be a better option...

I guess it really depends on what the comment is since some rude comments don't even deserve a response. I think you should say exactly what you said here. Gazing directly at your hand say, "The ring symbolizes our love for each other - which is HUGE!" Who could possibly respond to that? I completely agree that sometimes a huge smile is best. And the comment is great too. Often the less said the better. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
