I have bought the stone I want for my ring from a wholesale company that does not offer settings. So I have found the setting I want from a local jewelry chain. I have read that if you buy your stone from an outside source, the company setting your stone may not be liable for any damage to the stone during setting. Should I be worried? I would think that if they are getting my business, and they are professionals, it shouldn't be a problem. How can I safegard my stone?
I would not worry about the stone if you are giving it to a professional jeweler. Make sure that you are working with a reputable company and preferably one that does the stone setting "in house" rather than outsourced. This is a common concern. Jerry. Be sure to have a written appraisal for the stone and have it insured before you hand it over. Give the jeweler a copy of the appraisal too so that he knows you know the value. Then, once it is returned, if you are unsure that this is your original stone, have the appraiser look at it.
