This is a little different. My boyfriend and I (of five years) want to get married. My mother feels bad because she recently has been laid off and she can’t afford to contribute to our wedding which I have told her many times that we would pay for on our own…but she is wanting (very badly) to give us her ring that she purchased for herself about 3 years ago. It is a gorgeous ring…the center stone is a one carat round diamond with 6 small diamonds on each side of the center diamond. Really beautiful…I know she paid over $6,000 for it. But she is asking us to accept the ring as her “contribution” to the wedding. My fiancé wanted to spend $5,000 on a ring which he has (he’s been ring shopping with my mom) but mom insists that we save the $5,000 that he was going to spend on the ring and put that towards the wedding itself and take her ring.
I didn’t want to do this but she is insisting and it would save us quite a bit of money so we are thinking about it. My question to you is do you think this is tacky? The ring is on a gold ban I like white gold, but, how easy is it to take the ring to a jeweler to have them use the diamonds but put it on a white gold band? Is that expensive? Thanks so much for your feedback. This is a unique situation.

You can take your mothers yellow gold ring to a local jeweler and have the ring rhodium plated and that will turn the yellow gold to white, very simple process and the price should be around $20.00 on the high side.
