Using one ring for wedding band and engagement

I was wondering if it is ok if I only have one ring for the engagement and wedding. I want a ring that is a thick band with diamonds and find it unnecessary to have two. But I don't know if this is "traditional" or expectable. I'm a traditional girl but as a couple we are on a budget and would rather put "all the money" into one ring that I actually like.

An engagement ring is not necessary. If you are using only one ring, then get a wedding band and save that for the wedding day.
